Ortus Journal #1: Futures
Product Images By Stefan Lekic
Introduction
“And time will not fail; for it is always at a beginning.”
Aristotle
Ortus means sunrise, daybreak, birth, spring. Consequently, we thought it appropriate to start the journal with an issue about the future. Of course, there’s never only one. Futures presents a plethora of futures—scarred, twisted, morbid, joyful, melancholy, uncertain, humbling futures.
Dear Reader,
Felix and I edited this journal together. Since each of us was several, we divided up the work. Everything requiring patience, organisational ability, or technological nous fell to him. In the meantime, I reformatted citations, turned all the en dashes into em dashes, and gave myself numerous migraines polishing the features. A number of errors no doubt will have escaped my grasp. The embarrassment is mine—so too, the pleasure of finding and quietly removing them over the next few weeks.
Louie, our in-house illustrator, brought energy and artistry and supplied numerous beautiful pieces of art, as well as a humility and charm that has made working with him a joy. Thanks, too, to Yas who, while not part of the team, spent a lot of time and effort on producing the visuals for our music submissions.
We brought in Wei and James when we realised we needed brains with a bit more sobriety to make us respectable, keep us on track, show us how to tie a Full Windsor, and so on. We now have a Discord, a somewhat more active social media, and a few plans for the year that we’re excited to get working on.
A team of reviewers from the Theorygram community read through a considerable number of the pieces that were submitted to us, offered feedback, sparred over interpretations and significances, and made dealing with the surprisingly large number of submissions possible. I want to say a special thanks here to Breeze, fakelaotze, and diogenessbarrel, who’ve seen about half the pieces in here already.
A full list of credits can be found here.
I hope you enjoy reading the issue as much as we did putting it together.
Sincerely yours,
with all the faith I can muster,
Ulysse Malcoeur
